Brian Brown
Dr. Brian A. Brown - Co-Founder and Executive Director

Brian Brown is an archaeologist whose research interests include art, urbanism, empires, and how social identities were shaped by these phenomena in the ancient Middle East. He is a visiting scholar in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley and formerly a Topoi junior fellow at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany. He has worked at archaeological sites in Syria (Tell Ahmar, Tell Fakhariya, Umm Al Marra) and Jordan (Petra), and published articles on the royal ancestor cult in Assyria, the relationship between settlements and state control, and how empires represent the identities of the people they conquer. Brown holds a Ph.D. in ancient Near Eastern art and archaeology from the University of California at Berkeley and a B.A. in Old World Archaeology and Art from Brown University.

Dr. Catherine P. Foster - Co-Founder and Executive Director

Catherine Foster is an archaeologist specializing in the ancient Middle East whose research focuses on the everyday life of non-elite households from 5,000 years ago. She is also a strong advocate for public outreach and cultural heritage issues, such as combating the illicit antiquities trade and preservation of archaeological sites. She has served as an associate curator for the Badè Museum of Biblical Archaeology and instructor at the University of California at Berkeley; and authored several articles on archaeology and museum exhibitions including her co-edited book New Perspectives on Household Archaeology. She is also a cultural property analyst for the U.S. Department of State’s Cultural Heritage Center. Foster holds a Ph.D. in ancient Near Eastern art and archaeology from the University of California at Berkeley and a B.A. in anthropology from the University of California at San Diego with excavation experience in Jordan, Turkey, and the United States.
